Why Isn't My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT?

First, understand what "showing up in ChatGPT" actually means

There are two ways ChatGPT can surface your business. First, from training data — what the model absorbed about the web before its knowledge cutoff. Second, from live search grounding — when ChatGPT searches the web in real time to answer, it runs those queries against the Bing index. Not in Bing means not citable by ChatGPT.

This matters more every month. Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults now uses an AI chatbot at least weekly (Pew Research via iQDigital, 2026), and searches for "AI SEO" are up 84% year over year (SE Ranking via WebPossible). In a metro like Dallas-Fort Worth — 8.47 million residents and growing faster than any other top-5 metro (U.S. Census Bureau 2025 estimates via Fort Worth Economic Development Partnership) — that is a lot of buying questions being asked to a chatbot instead of a search box.

When we measured this in our Houston AI Visibility Index study, the metro-wide median AIR Score was 31 out of 100 — the median Houston business scored below a third of the possible visibility. The causes behind low scores are mechanical, not mysterious. Here are the five to check.

Cause 1: Your site never answers the question people actually ask

ChatGPT recommends businesses whose pages read like answers. If someone asks "who does emergency plumbing repair in Plano?" and your homepage says "Quality Solutions Since 1998" with no page that plainly states what you do, where, for whom, and at what price range, the model has nothing to quote.

5-minute check: Pick the three questions a customer would ask ChatGPT before hiring you. Search your own site for a page that directly answers each in the first paragraph. If you can't find one, ChatGPT can't either.

The fix: Build answer pages — one clear question per page, answered in the first 60 words, then supported with detail. Question-phrased headings help. So does freshness: pages untouched for roughly 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026). This is exactly why we structure pages like this one the way we do.

Cause 2: Your schema markup is missing or wrong

Schema is structured data — machine-readable labels that tell AI systems your name, address, services, hours, and FAQs without making them guess. It works: FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026), and AI Overviews now appear in about half of Google searches (D&D SEO Services, 2026). The same structured clarity helps every engine that reads your pages, ChatGPT included.

5-minute check: Paste your homepage URL into Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) or validator.schema.org. No LocalBusiness or Organization markup detected, or errors flagged? You've found a problem. Also check your services pages, not just the homepage.

The fix: Add LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, and phone; add FAQPage schema to any page that answers questions; add Service schema to service pages. Keep it consistent — the name and address in your schema must match your Google Business Profile character for character.

Cause 3: You're not in the Bing index — and ChatGPT searches Bing

This is the one almost nobody checks. When ChatGPT grounds an answer with live web search, it queries the Bing index. Businesses spend years optimizing for Google and never once verify they exist in Bing. If Bing hasn't indexed your site, ChatGPT's search mode literally cannot cite you, no matter how good your content is.

5-minute check: Go to Bing and search site:yourdomain.com. If few or no pages come back, you have a Bing indexing problem. Compare against the same search on Google to see the gap.

The fix: Set up Bing Webmaster Tools (free), submit your sitemap, and fix any crawl errors it reports. If you already use Google Search Console, Bing can import your site directly. This is often the fastest win on the whole list — a genuine index gap can close in days.

Cause 4: No third-party source corroborates you

AI systems are trained to distrust self-description. A business that exists only on its own website looks, to a model, like a business that might not exist at all. Corroboration matters: 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages with organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026) — established pages that other sources reference and link to.

5-minute check: Ask ChatGPT directly: "What do you know about [your business name] in [your city]?" Then Google your business name in quotes. If the only results are your own site and social profiles, corroboration is your gap.

The fix: Get listed and reviewed where AI systems look. Complete your Google Business Profile. Claim and fill out the industry directories that matter for your category. Get real reviews on Google and Yelp. In a fragmented market like Dallas — where no single agency or business owns the AI-visibility conversation yet — third-party signal is the tiebreaker AI uses to pick who to recommend. Cause 5: Your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers

Some websites — often on advice from a well-meaning developer, or via a security plugin's default setting — block AI crawlers outright in robots.txt. Blocking GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, or Bingbot tells OpenAI's systems to stay out. That is a legitimate choice for a publisher protecting content. For a local business that wants customers, it is self-inflicted invisibility.

5-minute check: Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser. Look for Disallow: / rules under user agents like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or a blanket User-agent: * disallow. Any of those blocking your whole site is a red flag.

The fix: Remove the disallow rules for the crawlers you want reading your site, or replace a blanket block with targeted rules that protect only what should be private. This is a two-minute edit for whoever manages your site — and worth checking on every site, because it silently undoes everything else on this list.

How do I find out which of these applies to my business?

You can run all five checks by hand in under half an hour — and you should. But the checks only tell you whether a door is open, not what AI actually says about you when a customer asks.

That second question is what our free scanner answers. It measures your AIR Score — a 0-100 composite of mention, recommendation, and sentiment across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity. It is the same measurement behind our live AI Visibility Index and our published Houston AI Visibility Index study, where the metro median came in at 31/100.

Deep AI Solutions is Texas-based, serving Dallas and the broader Texas market. We're a data-first shop: we publish our index and our research, and we compete on measurement rather than promises. If the scan shows problems, our plans run $1,299 to $5,999 per month, month-to-month with no setup fee — details on our services page.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find businesses?

Bing. When ChatGPT grounds an answer with live web search, it runs queries against the Bing index — not Google's. If your site isn't indexed in Bing, ChatGPT's search mode cannot cite you regardless of how well you rank on Google. Check with a site:yourdomain.com search on Bing, and submit your sitemap through the free Bing Webmaster Tools if pages are missing.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT after fixing these issues?

It depends on the cause. Bing indexing fixes and robots.txt unblocks can take effect within days once crawlers revisit your site. Content and schema changes are picked up as pages are recrawled. Corroboration — reviews, directory listings, third-party mentions — builds over weeks to months. Search-grounded answers update fastest; the model's underlying training knowledge updates only when new model versions ship.

Is showing up in ChatGPT different from ranking on Google?

Related but different. The two overlap heavily — 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages with organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026) — so good SEO helps. But AI answers add requirements traditional SEO ignores: direct answer-formatted content, schema markup, Bing indexing, third-party corroboration, and open AI crawler access. You can rank well on Google and still be invisible to ChatGPT. We break this down in our Dallas SEO vs. AI visibility comparison.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

For a local or service business, almost never. Blocking GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, or Bingbot in robots.txt tells AI systems to skip your site, which means they recommend competitors instead. Content-protection blocks make sense for publishers whose product is the content itself. If your product is a service and your website exists to win customers, blocked crawlers are self-inflicted invisibility. Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt today.

What is an AIR Score and how is it measured?

AIR Score, a trademark of Deep AI Solutions Inc, is a 0-100 composite that measures whether five AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity — mention your business, recommend it, and speak about it positively.
